Amazon’s image requirements are scattered across help pages, category style guides, and seller forum folklore. Getting them wrong ranges from mildly embarrassing to listing-suppressed-during-your-launch-week. Here is the consolidated, plain-English version we work from when preparing listing renders, though always verify current rules in Seller Central, because Amazon does revise them.
The main image: strictest rules on the platform
Your main (hero) image must show the actual product on a pure white background, RGB 255, 255, 255, not off-white, not light grey. The product should fill around 85% of the frame. No logos, no badges, no text overlays, no props that are not in the box, no packaging shots for most categories, and no watermarks anywhere, ever.
These are the violations Amazon’s automated checks catch most reliably, and a flagged main image can suppress the entire listing until fixed.
Resolution: the zoom threshold
Images need to be at least 1000 pixels on the longest side to enable zoom, and zoom matters, because shoppers who inspect details are shoppers close to buying. In practice we deliver considerably larger than the minimum so images stay sharp on every device Amazon renders them on. Maximum practical sizes and file formats (JPEG preferred, also PNG and others) are generous enough that resolution should never be your constraint.
Secondary images: where the actual selling happens
Rules loosen after the main image: colored backgrounds, lifestyle scenes, infographics, text, and demonstration shots are all allowed. This is where a deliberate image sequence does its work. The only hard rules that persist: images must truthfully represent the product, no offensive content, and no Amazon logos or badge imitations.
The accuracy rule most sellers overlook
Every image, photo or render, must show the product the customer will receive. Rendering a feature the product does not have, or a bundle that is not included, is a suppression risk and a returns machine. When we render listings, we treat the physical product spec as law: the image can be more beautiful than a photo, never more generous.
Quick pre-upload checklist
- Main image: pure white background, no text or logos, product fills roughly 85% of frame
- Every image at least 1000px on the longest side (we recommend far more)
- Product shown accurately, nothing added, nothing implied
- Variants each have their own correct images (wrong-variant images are a classic suppression trigger)
- Category style guide checked, some categories add specific rules
Requirements are the floor, not the goal
A compliant listing is merely eligible to compete. What decides the click is main image quality, sharpness, lighting, angle, presence. Compliance is table stakes; conversion is craft. If your images clear the rules but not the craft bar, that is fixable.
